Zincs should be replaced periodically. Due to galvanic corrosion, which occurs when two different metals are connected and immersed in seawater, electricity flows between them causing one of the metals to give up bits and pieces of itself. This effect would usually be seen on propellers, struts, and metal on stern drives.
The sacrificial anode protects these parts by giving up parts of itself instead of your expensive running gear. We recommend that they are replaced when about half the size of the anode has been lost to corrosion.
